PROVIDING GOD'S WORD FOR THE PEOPLE OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA

TRANSLATION

Here in Papua New Guinea many, many languages still do not have God’s Word. There are about eight hundred different languages found in PNG. Some language groups are very small having only a few hundred speakers; others are rather large having fifty thousand or more. The predominant lingua franca of PNG is Tok Pisin. This language though widely spoken among the majority has only an approximate vocabulary of less than 2,000 words. This means that the language is rather limited in its ability for precise communication. There is a translation of the complete Bible available in Pidgin. Though this translation for many leaves things to be desired, it is available to the majority of PNG. In addition many of the larger tribes have had translation work done for them, but many still wait…

Those that still sit and wait are the smaller isolated tribes who need someone to translate the Bible for them. Often these tribes have no educational system and so the majority cannot read and write. This language they know and love is their heart language. It is in this language that the timeless truths of God’s word must be translated into and given to them. Will you take a moment and thank God you have His word in your language and pray for those who are still waiting?

Greek and Hebrew classes are now being taught at GBBC in expectation that the students can use this knowledge for Bible translation. Tim is teaching one year of Greek and one year of Hebrew along with training nationals to teach Biblical languages.
